sometimes
we are deep-sea divers
and blind things leached of color
slide past our reach
we wear gloves and gear,
carry air as carapaces
on our backs, and know
ourselves beyond
our element
the pressure
of canyons
below us
is great,
but
the weight
of what lies
above
would
suffocate.
