As Julia reminds, me, those of us not in Louisiana or Missouri or Iraq, or Beslan or Kashmir or Gaza - those of us who just by quirky circumstance are, at the moment, safe - must not be immune to empathy, or succumb either to taking for granted the temporarily good conditions of our lives, or to letting petty annoyances become more significant than the true losses that are being suffered.
I pray that I don't find myself thinking that compassion is just too inconvenient, something better left by the wayside than carried on the journey.
Compassion is the journey.
