A while back, before I went out and saw Patty Griffins with Dar Williams, Mary Chafin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin, I decided to buy a CD or two so I could be more "informed" at the show.
Unfortunately, I went out without a list of all their names & by mistake, instead of getting myself a Patty Griffin CD, got Nanci Griffith, Other Voices, Other Rooms.
It was a fortuitous mistake. I'd never heard of her, but the album includes covers of songs by Kate Wolf, Vince Bell, Townes Van Zandt, Frank Christian, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Ralph McTell, Tom Paxton, Woody Guthrie, Janis Ian, Jon Vezner, Buddy Mondlock, Gordon Lightfoot, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Harry Belafonte, among others. It's about the writing. And it's all excellent.
